Activity 1:  Louisiana Civil War Timeline of Causes and Effects (GLEs:  62, 63, 77)

 

CC:  Have students throughout the unit create a series of timelines illustrating the major events on the national level and parallels in Louisiana history (e.g., events encouraging secession, events in the war, and events of the Reconstruction Era).

Causes of the Civil War  (14:00)

This compelling program reveals how the interests of the industrial North and the agricultural South (the Cotton Belt) came to clash over critical issues such as plantation slavery, and how these issues eventually led to the secession of the southern states.

 

CC:  As the unit progresses, have students complete graphic organizers with selected topics to emphasize specific cause and effects.

 

Students can use Inspiration software to create graphic organizers to illustrate specific causes and their effects.  The Inspiration templates folder has a Cause and Effects template in the Social Studies subfolder that could be used.

CC: Have students create a chart identifying the major political differences between the interests of the northern and southern states (see sample).
