Activity 9:  Tides: What's The Moon Got To Do With It? (SI GLEs: 13, 14, 15, 19, 33; ESS GLE: 41)

 

CC:  Students should find local tide data for a Louisiana coastal area. Students should correlate times of high and low tides for a given day to the phases of the Moon. Have the students relate how the Moon's phases play a role in the generation of tides.

Once the data is acquired, students could use Microsoft Excel to plot the tidal data for a month and then use its graphing function to generate the tidal curve for this data.
