Activity 1: Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) (GLEs: 08a, 14b, 14c, 16)
CC: Students will self-select a novel to be read independently or may read the literature circle
NOTE: While there are many popular lists of classic books, as well as teachers' tried-and-true favorites taught for years, many wonderful new books for middle school students have been published during the last few years. The publishing industry as well as popular authors of young adult literature have flourished during the recent past, resulting in many new titles in popular genres as well as modern story elements and themes. Teachers who have not done so already should become familiar with the annual list of titles on the Louisiana Young Readers' Choice Grades 6 - 8 reading incentive program that is sponsored by the Louisiana Center for the Book in the State Library of Louisiana. These are excellent titles for students to consider for independent reading. The State Library web site and your school librarian can tell you about this annual reading program in addition to the opportunity for students to read and vote for their favorite book.
