Unit 3: Electricity Activity 2: Heat from Electricity (Conduction/ Friction) (GLEs: 2, 12, 13, 21, 33, 39)
CC: Guide student groups to assist in designing an investigation that will prove that heat is transferred through touch (conduction) and answer their question of why the wire heats up in a circuit.
When students are designing their experiments have them use Inspiration or Kidspiration templates. Kidspiration template - "Science Experiment-Hot Wires!"
CC: Instruct students to record the change in temperature observed on the spoon's thermometer, explain how the spoon’s temperature changed, and relate the change to particle movement in the water, friction, and conduction.
Have students create their data charts and graph in Microsoft Excel. MS Excel Template - "Spoon Temperature Chart"
CC: Have the students create an illustration that helps them to recall the role of friction and conduction in creating heat and light energies in a light bulb and circuit.
Students can create their illustrations in Paint or Kid Pix.
