Wossman News Wellspring’s Celebrate the Family Art and Essay Contest Winners Steven Burrell, an 11th grade student in Mrs. DeAnne William’s English III class, was the grand prize winner of the contest. The main message of his essay was a plea to his readers to “Make a better choice, inspire a child, care for a friend, love a neighbor—(in support of) a greater cause, a greater community.” Steven received a new laptop as his prize. Other winners from WHS include: James Augurson (11th grade, Category Winner, senior high art, Mrs. Mary Rountree’s talented art class); Terrance Jenkins (11th grade, Category Winner, senior high essay, Mrs. DeAnne Williams), A’Keem Henry (11th grade, Honorable Mention, senior high art, Mrs. Rountree), Keondria Buie (11th grade, Judges’ Award, senior high essay, Mrs. Williams). Christopher Jones (12th grade) tied with Courtney Zenter of Neville High School for Monroe City Schools’ High School Student of the Year. Chris, along with Xenique Smith are Wossman's students of the year.
James Augurson (11th grade) was selected as the winner of the cover art contest for the LA Council for Exceptional Students 29th Annual Super Conference program. James will be presented a $150.00 check, framed artwork, and a complimentary program at the opening of the super conference. Terranisha Hiley (11th grade) was a semi-finalist in the Ayn Rand Essay Competition. This is a competitive event in which students nationwide read the novel, Anthem, by Ayn Rand, then write an analytical essay on the book and its philosophy. Hiley is one of only a very few students in LA to place in the national contest. Terranisha received $30.00 and a certificate as her prize. Ms. Michelle Manuel, WHS gifted teacher, was recognized by Renaissance Learning, Inc. for having a Reading Model Classroom. This award was based on Ms. Manuel’s students’ achievement in reading, as well as her support of Renaissance techniques and best classroom practices. Mrs. Mattie Johnson-Crenshaw, WHS JAG instructor, was awarded the title of Distinguished Educator by the U.S. Air Force. Mrs. Johnson-Crenshaw was selected to tour both Randolph and Lackland Air Force Bases in San Antonio during the week of November 17 through November 20, 2009. Mrs. Crenshaw was the only educator from the state of Louisiana selected to receive this award. Mrs. Crenshaw’s JAG students continue to perform service learning activities throughout the community.
