GEAR UP Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs
Jacqueline Matthews, Project Director, x5011
Role GEAR UP is a college awareness and readiness program. It encourages young people to stay in school, study hard, and take the right courses to go to college. The grant serves students attending Carroll Junior, Lee Junior, Martin Luther King, Carroll High, Neville High, and Wossman High Schools.
Program GEAR UP was enacted as part of the 1998 Higher Education Act to give more low-income students the skills, encouragement, and preparation to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school.
