Creating a Thermometer Chart, Microsoft Excel

Create a spreadsheet in Excel.  In this example, students are raising money for prom decorations.  Their goal is $1,000, and so far they have collected $433.  The chart shows what percentage of their goal has been reached.

  • In cell A16 type in GOAL, and in cell B16, type in $1,000 (or whatever amount you set for your goal).
  • In cell A17, type in TOTAL, and in cell B17, key in the formula:
    =SUM(B2:B15)
  • In cell B20, key in the formula:
    =B17/B16

As new data is entered in column B, the formulas display the current results.

To create the chart:

1.                  Select cell B20 and click the Chart Wizard button.

2.                  In step 1 of the Chart Wizard, select a Column chart (the first choice).

3.                  In step 2, click on the Title tab and add a title for your chart.  Click on the Axes tab and deselect the Category (x) axis.  Click on the Legend tab and delete the legend.  Click on the Data Labels tab and specify Show value.

4.                  Click Finish to view the chart.

5.                  Double-click the column to bring up the Format Data Series dialog box.  Click the Options tab and set the gap width to 0.  Click the Patterns tab to select the pattern you want.

6.                  Double-click the vertical axis to bring up the Format Axis dialog box.  Click on the Scale tab & set Minimum to 0 and Maximum to 1.
