Title:  The Power of Words
Subject:  English/Language Arts
Grade Level:  K - 5
Overview:
The learner will construct meaningful sentences using correct word usage, subject/verb agreement, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. The learner will also use adjectives to describe nouns within each sentence.
Approximate Duration:  five 50 minute classes

Objectives:
1. TLW understand the subject/verb agreement relationship and its importance in creating effective
sentences.
2. TLW use a variety of word building techniques to
relate their ideas to their audience.
3. TLW write complete thoughts with correct mechanics usage.
4. TLW spell each word correctly according to word-and-meaning strategies taught which includes word tenses, subject/verb agreement, and application of phonics skills.
5. TLW apply correct handwriting techniques when constructing meaningful sentences.

Background Information:
TL should be able to construct simple sentences and a knowledge of subject/verb agreement. TL should have prior knowledge of capitalization and punctuation. TL should have some knowledge of the computer.

Lesson Procedures:
1. TTW review with learners simple subject/verb agreement using overhead projector/transparency.
2. TTW review correct capitalization and punctuation of sentences with learners.
3. TLW form simple sentences, punctuation and capitalization using flashcards in whole group and then smaller groups.
4. TTW give examples of more complex sentences incorporating adjectives, and helping verbs.
5. TLW construct complex sentences from flashcards containing adjectives and helping verbs.
6. TLW construct their own complex sentences using sentence strips to write their sentences on to share in whole class setting.
7. TTW monitor and assist those having difficulty.
8. TLW go to computer website: Wacky Web Tales for further reinforcement of the above objectives.
9. TTW distribute worksheets as guided practice on complete sentences including correct punctuation and capitalization.
10. TLW complete these worksheets to be checked together in class for feedback of understanding of skills taught.
11. If necessary TTW work in small group setting with those who are having problems while the remainder go to computers for reinforcement.
12. TLW take multiple choice test and writing exercise for evaluation of skills taught.

Explorations and Extensions:
Locate various items in classroom or home for recognition of subjects, verbs, helping verbs, and adjectives and make a list to be shared in whole group setting. Construct sentences using these words making sure to use correct punctuation and capitalization.

Reflections:
Determine to what level of comprehension each student mastered the language mechanics and expression. Who needs reinforcement, reteaching, and those to be challenged.
