Lesson Plan
Title:  The Nine Planets
Subject:  Science
Grade Level:  2 - 3
Overview:
Students will learn the nine planets in correct order. Students will choose one of the nine planets to research and find five interesting facts about it. Students must also find one photo of their planet. Using Inspirations, students will create a planet concept map and present it to the class.
Approximate Duration:  3 to 4 30 minute class periods
Content Standards:
  • Earth and Space
The students will develop an understanding of the properties of earth materials, the structure of the Earth system, the Earth's history, and the Earth's place in the universe.
Benchmarks:
  • ESS-E-B1
observing and describing the characteristics of objects in the sky;   (1)
  • ESS-E-B2
demonstrating how the relationship of the Earth, moon, and sun causes eclipses and moon phases;   (2,3,4)
  • ESS-E-B4
modeling changes that occur because of the rotation of the Earth (alternation of night and day) and the revolution of the Earth around the sun;   (1,2,3,4)
  • ESS-E-B5
understanding that the sun, a star, is a source of heat and light energy and identifying its effects upon the Earth;   (1,2,3,4)
  • ESS-E-B6
understanding that knowledge of the Earth as well as of the universe is gained through space exploration.   (1,2,3,4)
  • ESS-E-B3
observing and recording the changing appearances and positions of the moon in the sky at night and determining the monthly pattern of lunar change;   (1)

Background Information:
Earth, one of the nine known planets in our solar system, revolves around the Sun once a year; the positions in the sky of the Sun and constellations seem to change as Earth moves in its orbit.
Lesson Procedures:
1. Using a KWL chart, the teacher will discuss what the students know and want to know about the Solar System.
2. The teacher will teach the students the "Family of the Sun". This song teaches the students to idenify and memorize the planets in correct order.
3. The students will choose a planet of their choice and research it on the internet. The teacher will inform students to find one photo and five interesting facts about their planet.
4. Students will type their interesting facts into a planet concept map using Inspirations. Students will include photo of their planet on their concept map.
5. Students will use the printed copy of Planet concept map to orally present facts about their planet.
6. The teacher will enter all concept maps into a KidPix Slideshow. Students will enjoy the Planet Slideshow at the end of the lesson.
7. The teacher will review what the students have learned using the KWL chart created at the beginning of the unit.
Assessment Procedures:
Students will be assessed through monitoring and one on one discussions with students. Formally students will be graded using a rubric. Students will also be given a quiz to see if they were listening to their classmates interesting facts.
Accommodations/Modifications:
Inclusion (Special Education students placed in a regular classroom with assistance) students have to find only two interesting facts about their planet. The teacher will assist is making the Planet Concept Map. Inclusion students will listen to their facts on tape before they give their presentations orally.
