Overview:
Students in this lesson will examine countries whose history and geography are very different from those of the United States.  Latin American countries have complex environments, rapid population growth and political turmoil hinders growth.  Latin America's problems are a deep concern of the United States.
Approximate Duration:  2-3 Class Meeting 50min./class

         Students develop a spatial understanding of Earth's surface and the processes that shape it, the connections between people and places, and the relationship between man and his environment.

As consumers and citizens, they will be able to recognize how our personal, professional, and political actions affect the natural world.

         The student will use economic concepts to understand and make reasoned decisions about economic issues.

1.The student will locate Latin America on a globe or map.
2.The student will use the internet and other resources to gather data on Latin American countries.
3.The student will summarize positives and negatives of the region.
4.The student will discuss problem-solving solutions to areas of concern in Latin America.

Background Information:
Knowledge of how diverse a region Latin America is and surfing the internet.
Lesson Procedures:
1.Show through oral discussion and map presentation the area of Latin America.
2.Assign through grouping some of the major countries in Latin America for research via the internet.
3.Record a list of the countries and needed data to be research (checklist).
4.Each group will share data found.
5.Each student will write a composition based on the data shared telling which country they would most and least like to live in.
6.Class quiz of basic data on some of the Latin American countries.
Assessment Procedures:
Observations, oral response ,checklist on research data, quiz items response, and written composition.
Accommodations/Modifications:
Limit region to only a couple of countries.
