Title:
Hotel Infinity
Subject: Mathematics
Grade Level:
6 - 8
Overview:
The teacher will read a story of
Hotel Infinity to the students. The students will have to design in detail their
Hotel Infinity. The students will use computers with a paint program to design
their Hotel.
Approximate Duration: 55 minutes
Content Standards:
Number and Number Relations
In problem-solving investigations, students demonstrate an understanding of the
real number system and communicate the relationships within that system using a
variety of techniques and tools.
Benchmarks:
N-1-M
demonstrating that a rational number can be expressed in many forms, and
selecting an appropriate form for a given situation (e.g., fractions, decimals,
and percents); (1,2,3,4)
N-5-M
applying an understanding of rational numbers and arithmetic operations to
real-life situations; (1,2,4)
Grade-Level Expectations (GLEs):
Grade 6
5. Decide which representation (i.e., fraction or decimal) of a positive number
is appropriate in a real-life situation (N-1-M) (N-5-M)
Grade 7
9. Determine when an estimate is sufficient and when an exact answer is needed
in real-life problems using decimals and percents (N-5-M) (N-7-M)
Grade 8
6. Identify missing information or suggest a strategy for solving a real-life,
rational-number problem (N-5-M)
9. Find unit/cost rates and apply them in real-life problems (A-5-M) (N-5-M)
(N-8-M)
Interdisciplinary Connections:
Business Education : Standard 6
The student will demonstrate the ability to use standard equipment found in a
variety of modern offices.
Educational Technology Standards:
Identify and define computer and networking terms (e.g. modem, file server,
client station, LAN, Internet/Intranet, data storage device).
Demonstrate the operations of a computer (e.g., touch-keyboarding skills, save,
organize and back-up files) and other peripheral devices (scanner, digital and
video cameras, VCR, laser disc player) at an intermediate level.
Objectives:
The learner will use the computer to build and design their Hotel Infinity. The
learner will correct terminology for the computer.
Lesson Materials and Resources:
Copies of the story of "Hotel Infinity"
Bulletin Board to hang their Hotel Infinity designs.
Technology Tools and Materials:
Hardware: Computer, printer, mouse, monitor, floppy disk,
Software: Paint program
Background Information:
Students should be familiar with the computer and printer and functional with a
mouse.
Learn Vocabulary words for the Unit.
Infinity, finite, one-to-one correspondence, transfinite arithmetic
Lesson Procedures:
1. Read the Story of Hotel Infinity.
2. As the teacher reads, students should try to picture the hotels & rooms in
their minds.
3. Brainstorm with the children how the hotel looks - the lobby, the other
rooms, the hallways, the buses, the landscape outside, does it have a pool.
4. Next, the students will use the computer with paint program to draw their
Hotel infinity. The detail is in the design. The hallway, pool, landscape,
lobby, buses, checking/out counter should all be included in the design.
5. The students will present their hotel design and how the hotel works and
operates. The presentation will be take as a oral grade on conciseness and
organization of the hotel.
6. Their Hotel Infinities will be displayed on a bulletin board outside the
teachers classroom.
Assessment Procedures:
The students will be assessed on the presentation of their Hotel Infinity. The
students will be graded on the components of the rubric. They must meet the
needs of the rubric for an A, B, C, D, or F.
Accommodations/Modifications:
The teacher will allow more time for certain students. The teacher will also
have a magnifying screen for the computer.

Reproducible Materials:
Hotel Infinity
Hotel Infinity Rubric
Explorations and Extensions:
The students may enhance their hotels with the use of the paint program. The
more the utilize the software on the computer the more they can adapt to the
skill and understanding of the hotel concept.
