Lesson Plan
Title:  Heredity As it Relates to You and Me
Subject:  Science
Grade Level:  7
Overview:
This lesson introduces the use Punnett squares to predict the outcome of certain traits between homozygous and heterozygous crosses. It also distinguishes between dominant and recessive alleles.
Approximate Duration:  One 50 minute class period
Content Standards:
  • Life Science
The students will become aware of the characteristics and life cycles of organisms and understand their relationships to each other and to their environment.
Benchmarks:
  • LS-M-B2
describing the role of chromosomes and genes in heredity;   (1,4)
  • LS-M-B3
describing how heredity allows parents to pass certain traits to offspring.   (1,4)
Interdisciplinary Connections:
  • Mathematics : Data analysis, Probability, and Discrete Math
In problem-solving investigations, students discover trends, formulate conjectures regarding cause-and-effect relationships, and demonstrate critical thinking skills in order to make informed decisions.
Educational Technology Standards:
  • Demonstrate the operations of a computer (e.g., touch-keyboarding skills, save, organize and back-up files) and other peripheral devices (scanner, digital and video cameras, VCR, laser disc player) at an intermediate level.
  • Use information, media, and technology in a responsible manner which includes following the school's acceptable use policy, adhering to copyright laws, respecting the rights of others, and employing proper etiquette in all forms of communication.
  • Understand Internet concepts (e.g., website, hypertext link, bookmarks, URL addresses) and apply intermediate on-line searching techniques (e.g., employ keyword, phrases, and Boolean Operators).
Objectives:
TLW:
1. distinguish between dominant and recessive alleles.
2. distinguish between genotype and phenotype.
3. complete Punnet squares when given the genotype of each parent.
4. predict the outcome of offspring after completing a Punnet square.

Background Information:
Students will come to class with a basic knowledge of genetics and heredity. They should have a basic understanding of genotypes and phenotypes as well as dominant and recessive alleles. They should be able to access the Internet and follow directions on how to finish this assignment.
Lesson Procedures:
1. Have students open a Word document on their computer.
2. Students will now go the Trackstar Website and access track number 138170.
3. Students will follow the instructions on the track to finish the assignment.
Assessment Procedures:
Teacher observation
Copy of completed track
Rubric
Accommodations/Modifications:
Special needs students and 504 students will be paired with stronger students for peer tutoring. Students will be given oral as well as visual instructions on how to complete this assignment.
