Lesson Plan
Title:  Heredity
Subject:  Science
Grade Level:  7
Overview:
This lesson is an introduction to heredity focusing on the basic terminology and the introduction of Gregor Mendel as the "Father of Genetics."
Approximate Duration:  One 50 minute class period
Content Standards:
  • Life Science
The students will become aware of the characteristics and life cycles of organisms and understand their relationships to each other and to their environment.
Benchmarks:
  • LS-M-B2
describing the role of chromosomes and genes in heredity;   (1,4)
  • LS-M-B3
describing how heredity allows parents to pass certain traits to offspring.   (1,4)
Interdisciplinary Connections:
  • English/Language Arts : Standard 2
Students write competently for a variety of purposes and audiences.

Students communicate using standard English grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and handwriting.
  • English/Language Arts : Standard 5
Students locate, select, and synthesize information from a variety of texts, media, references, and technological sources to acquire and communicate knowledge.
  • Arts : Creative Expression
Students develop creative expression through the application of knowledge, ideas, communication skills, organization abilities and imagination.
Educational Technology Standards:
  • Demonstrate the operations of a computer (e.g., touch-keyboarding skills, save, organize and back-up files) and other peripheral devices (scanner, digital and video cameras, VCR, laser disc player) at an intermediate level.
  • Use information, media, and technology in a responsible manner which includes following the school's acceptable use policy, adhering to copyright laws, respecting the rights of others, and employing proper etiquette in all forms of communication.
  • Use multimedia tools and desktop publishing to develop and present computer-generated projects for directed and independent learning activities.
  • Understand Internet concepts (e.g., website, hypertext link, bookmarks, URL addresses) and apply intermediate on-line searching techniques (e.g., employ keyword, phrases, and Boolean Operators).
Objectives:
TLW:
1. Define terms related to genetics and heredity found on teacher made handout.
2. Access World Book Online or the Internet to research Gregor Mendel.
3. Record at least 5 facts about Gregor Mendel.
4. Use Microsoft Publisher or KidPix to make a flyer that contains 5 facts about Gregor Mendel.

Background Information:
Students will come to me with varying degrees of knowledge about science. Some students will have limited to no knowledge of computer use.
Lesson Procedures:
1. Pass out vocabulary list.
2. Have students define words using textbooks.
3. Students should access the Internet and go to World Book Online or search the Internet for information on Gregor Mendel. They should collect and record at least 5 facts about Mendel.
4. Students will use Microsoft Publisher or Kid Pix to make a flyer containing the information they found about Mendel.
5. Print and save on a floppy disk a copy of flyer and turn in to teacher.
Assessment Procedures:
1. Teacher observation
2. Copy of students' flyers
