Title:  One Grain of Rice

Overview:
The students will read the story "One Grain of Rice" and use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast different topics in the story to topics today.
Approximate Duration:  2 fifty-minute class periods

Background Information:
The learner should be able to do a keyword search on the computer. The learner must be able to use a Venn Diagram. The learner must be able to compose a paragraph.
Lesson Procedures:
1. The students will read the story "One Grain of Rice" by Demi.

2. The students will get into groups of three.

3. The groups will pull a topic from the bag and fill in a Venn diagram on their topic. The topics are: Compare animals in India to animals in America.  Compare transportation in the story to transportation used today. Compare culture in India to culture in America today.

4. Each group will have a researcher, writer and reader.

5. The researcher will use a keyword search to research facts about their topic. The writer  will write notes, and the reader will read  information from the Venn diagram and the books.

6. The students will write a paragraph comparing and contrasting their topics.

7. The students will type their paragraphs on KidPix.

Explorations and Extensions:
The students could research India's culture and describe and design clothing. The students could also listen to music from India. The students could also experiment with rice and weigh it after its placed in different substances.
