Title:  Getting to Know You
Subject:  English/Language Arts
Grade Level:  4
Overview:
In this lesson, the students will collect and interpret data from their friends, including their month of birth, favorite food, and favorite color. Then they will create a concept map about their friends. After that, based on the map, they will write a paragraph to describe their friends.
Approximate Duration:  2 sixty-minute class periods

Background Information:
The students should know how to form complete sentences using correct capitalization and period. They should also know how to input their information on the computer.
Lesson Procedures:
1. The teacher will review the 5 steps of writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing).
2. The teacher will distribute the sheet "Getting to Know You" to the students.
3. The teacher will guide the students to complete the pre-selected items: Favorite color, Birthday month, State of birth, Favorite food, Favorite sport, and Favorite school subject.
4. The students will complete the sheet.
5. The teacher will have the students to choose their friend in the class and sit next him/her.
6. The students will complete the writing process. They have a finished copy to take to the computer to publish.
7. Then the students will take turn to type on the computer using "Inspiration" and KidPix programs to publish their work.
Assessment Procedures:
The teacher will evaluate the students product of graphic organizers. The teacher will also use rubrics for paragraph writing to assess student writing.
Accommodations/Modifications:
The teacher may modify the writing assignment according to the functioning levels of the students. For instance, for the higher functioning group, the teacher will have the students to complete the outline map "My Friend" on all items. Then write a paragraph describing their friends. For the lower functioning group, the students will complete the outline map "My Friend" on 3 items. Then write a paragraph.

Students may use the data collected from the "Getting to Know You" worksheet to form graphs on the different items.
SI-E-A5 TLW using data, including numbers and graphs, to explain observations and experiments.
