Lesson Plan
Title:  Extra Extra, Read All About the Geologic Time Scale
Subject:  Science
Grade Level:  7 - 8
Overview:
This lesson culminates a unit on the geologic time scale. Teachers should help students coordinate the facts they find into "news" articles for a newsletter.
Approximate Duration:  1-2 class periods
Content Standards:
  • Earth and Space
The students will develop an understanding of the properties of earth materials, the structure of the Earth system, the Earth's history, and the Earth's place in the universe.
Benchmarks:
  • ESS-M-A2
understanding that the Earth's crust and solid upper mantle are dividing plates that move in response to convection currents (energy transfers) in the mantle;   (1)
  • ESS-M-A6
explaining the processes involved in the rock cycle;   (1,4)
  • ESS-M-B1
investigating how fossils show the development of life over time;   (2,3,4)
  • ESS-M-B2
devising a model that demonstrates supporting evidence that the Earth has existed for a vast period of time;   (1,2,3,4)
  • ESS-M-B3
understanding that earth processes such as erosion and weathering affect the Earth today and are similar to those which occurred in the past.   (1,2,3,4)
Interdisciplinary Connections:
  • Social Studies : Geography: Physical and Cultural Systems
Students develop a spatial understanding of Earth's surface and the processes that shape it, the connections between people and places, and the relationship between man and his environment.
Educational Technology Standards:
  • Identify and define computer and networking terms (e.g. modem, file server, client station, LAN, Internet/Intranet, data storage device).
  • Demonstrate the operations of a computer (e.g., touch-keyboarding skills, save, organize and back-up files) and other peripheral devices (scanner, digital and video cameras, VCR, laser disc player) at an intermediate level.
  • Compose and edit a multi-page document with appropriate formatting using word-processing skills. (e.g., menu, tool bars, dialog boxes, spell check, thesaurus, page layout, headers and footers, word count, margins, tabs, spacing, columns, page orientation)
  • Use information, media, and technology in a responsible manner which includes following the school's acceptable use policy, adhering to copyright laws, respecting the rights of others, and employing proper etiquette in all forms of communication.
  • Use multimedia tools and desktop publishing to develop and present computer-generated projects for directed and independent learning activities.
  • Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools, web tools) to gather information for problem solving, communication, collaborative writing and publishing to create products for various audiences.
  • Understand Internet concepts (e.g., website, hypertext link, bookmarks, URL addresses) and apply intermediate on-line searching techniques (e.g., employ keyword, phrases, and Boolean Operators).
Objectives:
TLW research one era from geologic time with emphasis on a given area:biology, climate, or geology.
TLW cut/paste information from web pages to a word document.
TLW summarize information gathered from the internet and write an article for a newsletter.
Lesson Materials and Resources:
Geologic TIme Scale worksheet
pen/paper
news article
Technology Tools and Materials:

Hardware:
computer
tv/scan converter
printer

Software:

Background Information:
Students should have already begun learning about eons, eras, periods, and epochs. Students should also be familiar with internet research. Students will work cooperatively in order to complete their assignment.
Lesson Procedures:
1. The teacher will pass out copies of a newspaper article.
2. The teacher will ask students for clues as to what makes the article good/bad.
3. The teacher will tell the students they are going to culminate their unit on geologic time by researching specific eras for characteristics and putting them into a newsletter.
4. Students will pick partners with whom to work.
5. The teacher will pass out the worksheet starting the geologic time scale newsletter.
6. The teacher will review with the students terms: eon, paleozoic, mesozoic, cenozoic.
7. The teacher will use scan converter/tv to show students what a finished newsletter will look like.
8. Students and partners will go to computers to research an era and topic using the given websites. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/, http://www.cotf.edu/ete/modules/msese/earthsysflr/geotime.html, http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/help/timeform.html
9. As students compile their research, they will cooperatively create news articles.
10. All news articles will be turned in to the teacher for editing.
11. After editing, the teacher will help students upload their articles.
12. After the product is finished, the teacher will print a copy for each student.
Assessment Procedures:
Students will be graded on their participation in this activity. A rubric will be used in scoring participation.
Accommodations/Modifications:
Students identified as 504/Resource will be placed with buddies for assistance.
Certain students will be given a copy of a newsletter to use as a model.
