| Students will identify the Louisiana settings of the novel, The
Awakening, and research their history, culture, landmarks and
industries. Each group will present its research to the class using
PowerPoint and other media. Students will also individually prepare a
travel brochure using Print Shop Premier Edition. |

Background
Information:
The students should be able to do research on the Internet and use basic
PowerPoint, Print Shop, and Inspiration. The students should have read
the novel The Awakening by Kate Chopin. |
Lesson
Procedures:
Day One
1. Show the video clip from the PBS website that illustrates the setting
of the novel.
2. Ask students to brainstorm for the primary settings of the novel and
list them using Inspiration on the presentation monitor.
3. Ask students to locate the settings on the Louisiana map and mark
them.
4. Divide students into groups of 4.
5. Each group will choose one setting by lottery.
6. Groups will choose role for each group member: 2 researchers, 1
layout artist, and 1 graphics specialist.
7. Groups will use computer lab and suggested Internet sites to research
setting's culture, industry, landmarks, history, and changes since the
1900 setting of the novel.
Day 2
1. Groups will use entire 50 minute period to continue researching
setting's culture, industry, landmarks, history, and changes since the
1900 setting of the novel.
2. Both the layout artist and graphics specialist will be responsible
for collecting pictures and maps and storing in a computer folder.
Day 3
1. Groups will prepare PowerPoint presentation focusing on setting's
culture, industry, landmarks, history, and changes since the 1900
setting of the novel.
2. The layout artist will be responsible for designing and typing
presentation.
Day 4
1. Groups will complete PowerPoint presentation.
2. Students will begin work on individual travel brochures using Print
Shop Premier Edition.
Day 5
1. Students will complete individual travel brochures.
2. Groups will rehearse PowerPoint presentations to avoid reading the
slides aloud.
Day 6
1. Groups will present PowerPoint presentations to the class.
2. Students will turn in travel brochures.
3. Students will vote on the most interesting place to visit.
4. Winning group will be treated to a Cajun feast.
