Lesson Plan
Title:  Comparison Shopping
Subject:  Mathematics
Grade Level:  9 - 12
Overview:
Students will "surf the net" as a means of comparison shopping . Students will choose one article of clothing offered for sale in various catalogs on the Internet. They will compare quality, style and price of the garment, then make an informed choice based on their research. They will then use the word processing program to write a brief summary of their findings to present to the class.
Approximate Duration:  2-3 class periods (50 minutes)
Content Standards:
  • Number and Number Relations
In problem-solving investigations, students demonstrate an understanding of the real number system and communicate the relationships within that system using a variety of techniques and tools.
  • Data analysis, Probability, and Discrete Math
In problem-solving investigations, students discover trends, formulate conjectures regarding cause-and-effect relationships, and demonstrate critical thinking skills in order to make informed decisions.
Benchmarks:
  • N-1-H
demonstrating an understanding of the real number system;   (1,2,3,4)
  • N-3-H
using number sense to estimate and determine if solutions are reasonable;   (1,2,3,4,5)
  • N-5-H
selecting and using appropriate computational methods and tools for given situations (e.g., estimation, or exact computation using mental arithmetic, calculator, symbolic manipulator, or paper and pencil);   (1,2,4)
  • N-7-H
justifying reasonableness of solutions and verifying results.   (2,4)
  • D-1-H
designing and conducting statistical experiments that involve the collection, representation, and analysis of data in various forms (Analysis should reflect an understanding of factors such as: sampling, bias, accuracy, and reasonableness of data.);   (3)
  • D-9-H
using discrete math to model real-life situations (e.g., fair games or elections, map coloring).   (1,2,4)
Interdisciplinary Connections:
  • English/Language Arts : Standard 3
Students communicate using standard English grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and handwriting.
  • English/Language Arts : Standard 4
Students demonstrate competence in speaking and listening as tools for learning and communicating.
  • English/Language Arts : Standard 5
Students locate, select, and synthesize information from a variety of texts, media, references, and technological sources to acquire and communicate knowledge.
  • English/Language Arts : Standard 7
Students apply reasoning and problem solving skills to reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and visually representing.
  • Arts : Creative Expression
Students develop creative expression through the application of knowledge, ideas, communication skills, organization abilities and imagination.
  • Arts : Critical Analysis
Students make informed oral and written observations about the arts by developing skills for critical analysis through the study of and exposure to the arts.
Educational Technology Standards:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills of Internet use and other resources consistent with acceptable use policies including the legal consequences of plagiarism and the need for authenticity in student work through an understanding of copyright issues.
  • Demonstrate and advocate legal and ethical behaviors among peers, family, and community regarding the use of technology and information.
  • Refine knowledge and enhance skills in keyboarding, word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheets, databases, multimedia, and telecommunications in preparing and presenting classroom projects.
  • Evaluate technology-based options for lifelong learning.
  • Use appropriate technology to locate, retrieve, organize, analyze, evaluate, and communicate information for problem solving and decision making.
  • Evaluate the usage of technology and the processes involved during and upon completion of individual and group projects.
Objectives:
The learner will:
1. Use the Internet to research 3 online catalog and comparison shop for one article of clothing.
2. Compare and contrast 3 similar articles of clothing for quality, design, and price.
3. Write a brief summary describing his/her choice of clothing based on research gained from the Internet.
4. Use a word processing program (Microsoft Word) to write a summary of his/her research on the Internet.

Background Information:
Students will need to know what comparison shopping means and how to access websites on the Internet.
Lesson Procedures:
1. Students will use the Internet to explore and locate sites to use for comparison shopping project.
2. Students will choose a specific garment, such as relaxed-fit blue jeans or red turtleneck sweater, to comparison shop at 3 websites. At each site they will compare price, quality and design.
3. Students will print pictures of each garment chosen for comparison.
4. Students will write a brief summary of their findings using Microsoft Word. This summary will be no more than one page.
Assessment Procedures:
1. Observation of computer usage
2. Evaluation of written project
Accommodations/Modifications:
Students will limited computer skills will be paired with students possessing more advanced skills.
