| Title: Comparing
Plant and Animal Cells |
| Subject: Science
|
| Grade Level: 7
- 8 |
| Overview:
|
| Using Kid Pix software, students will draw and label a plant cell
and an animal cell. They will also make a Venn diagram comparing and
contrasting the different organelles in each type cell using
Inspiration. |
| Approximate
Duration: 50 Minutes |
Content Standards:
- Life Science
The students will become aware of the characteristics and life
cycles of organisms and understand their relationships to each other
and to their environment.
|
Benchmarks:
- LS-M-A1
describing the observable components and functions of a cell,
such as the cell membrane, nucleus, and movement of molecules into
and out of cells; (1)
- LS-M-A2
comparing and contrasting the basic structures and functions of
different plant and animal cells; (1,2,3,4)
|
Interdisciplinary Connections:
- English/Language Arts : Standard 3
Students communicate using standard English grammar, usage,
sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and
handwriting.
- Arts : Creative Expression
Students develop creative expression through the application of
knowledge, ideas, communication skills, organization abilities and
imagination.
|
Educational Technology Standards:
- Demonstrate the operations of a computer (e.g.,
touch-keyboarding skills, save, organize and back-up files) and
other peripheral devices (scanner, digital and video cameras, VCR,
laser disc player) at an intermediate level.
- Use information, media, and technology in a responsible manner
which includes following the school's acceptable use policy,
adhering to copyright laws, respecting the rights of others, and
employing proper etiquette in all forms of communication.
- Use multimedia tools and desktop publishing to develop and
present computer-generated projects for directed and independent
learning activities.
|
Objectives:
TLW:
1. use KidPix to draw and label organelles of a plant and an animal
cell listed on the handout.
2. use Inspiration to draw a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the
listed organelles of a plant and an animal cell. |
Lesson
Materials and Resources:
Transparencies or plastic film
Markers
Paper
Pencil
Sciencesaurus Student Handbook |
Technology
Tools and Materials:
Hardware: Computer, Floppy Disk, Printer
Software: KidPix, Inspiration |
Background
Information:
Students come to me with varying levels of knowledge about science.
They have varying levels of technology skills. They should be able to
open Kid Pix and Inspiration and follow the directions on the handout.
|
Lesson
Procedures:
1. Give each student a transparency and have them trace the picture of
a plant cell and an animal cell from their Sciencesaurus Student
Handbook.
2. Tape transparency to computer screen and draw and label each cell
using Kid Pix. (Student should have 2 drawings when finished.)
3. At the bottom of each drawing have students type a brief
description of the function of each labeled organelle.
4. Students should print and save on a floppy disk a copy of each
drawing.
5. Students will then access Inspiration and make a Venn diagram
comparing and contrasting the listed organelles.
|
Assessment
Procedures:
Teacher observation
Rubric
Copy of drawings |
Accommodations/Modifications:
Students with weak computer skills will use peer tutoring or will be
allowed to draw their diagrams. 504 students will be paired with
stronger students to help keep them on task. Visual and oral
instructions will be given to accommodate different learning styles.
