Title: Beautiful Bugs

Subject: Science

Grade Level: 1 - 3

Overview:
This lesson is designed to have students construct a diagram of the main body parts of an insect.
Approximate Duration: 1 - 45 minute period

Content Standards:
Science as Inquiry
The students will do science by engaging in partial and full inquiries that are within their developmental capabilities.
Life Science
The students will become aware of the characteristics and life cycles of organisms and understand their relationships to each other and to their environment.

Benchmarks:
SI-E-A1
asking appropriate questions about organisms and events in the environment;
SI-E-A3
communicating that observations are made with one's senses;

SI-E-A4
employing equipment and tools to gather data and extend the sensory observations;

SI-E-B6
reviewing and asking questions about the results of investigations.

LS-E-A2
distinguishing between living and nonliving things;

LS-E-A3
locating and comparing major plant and animal structures and their functions;

LS-E-A4
recognizing that there is great diversity among organisms;

LS-E-B2
observing, comparing, and grouping plants and animals according to likenesses and/or differences;

LS-E-B3
observing and recording how the offspring of plants and animals are similar to their parents;

LS-E-C2
describing how the features of some plants and animals enable them to live in specific habitats;

Interdisciplinary Connections:
Mathematics : Measurement
In problem-solving investigations, students demonstrate an understanding of the concepts, processes, and real-life applications of measurement.
Mathematics : Geometry
In problem-solving investigations, students demonstrate an understanding of geometric concepts and applications involving one-, two-, and three-dimensional geometry, and justify their findings.
English/Language Arts : Standard Six
Students read, analyze, and respond to literature as a record of life experiences.
Arts : Creative Expression
Students develop creative expression through the application of knowledge, ideas, communication skills, organization abilities and imagination.
Agriscience/Agribusiness : Animal Systems
AgEd/FFA students will understand the concepts and principles of animal science.

Educational Technology Standards:
Identify, explain, and effectively use input, output and storage devices of computers and other technologies (e.g., keyboard, mouse, scanner, adaptive devices, monitor, printer floppy disk, hard drive).
Use accurate and developmentally appropriate terminology (e.g., cursor, software, hardware, pull down menu, window, disk drive, hard drive, CD-ROM, laser disc) when referring to technology.
Use a variety of developmentally appropriate resources and productivity tools (e.g., logical thinking programs, writing and graphic tools,digital cameras,graphing software) for communication,presentation,and illustration of thoughts, ideas,and stories.

Objectives:
TSW construct a diagram demonstrating the body parts of an insect.
Lesson Materials and Resources:
Bug poster
"I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly" book

Technology Tools and Materials:
Hardware:
Computer
Printer
Software:
KidPix

Background Information:
The student should be able to operate the tools of KidPix.
The student should be able to identify the body parts of an insect.

Lesson Procedures:
1. TTW state the lesson's objective.
2. TTW will motivate the students by reading "I Know An Old Who Swallowed A Fly".
3. TTW discuss and demonstrate the body parts of an insect using a poster. (the poster demonstrates the body parts using velcro strips so that the teacher can add the various parts as they are discussed.)
3. TSW go to the computer and use KidPix to construct a diagram of an insect.
4. TTW monitor as the students complete their drawings providing help as needed.
5. TTW remind the students of the required body parts while the students check their drawings.
6.TSW print the completed drawing to be turned in for a project grade.
Assessment Procedures:
TTW monitor the students and provide help as needed during the completion of the diagrams.
Completed diagrams will be graded.
Accommodations/Modifications:
Students in need of remediation may draw the three basic main body parts. (head, thorax, abdomen)
Students in need of enrichment may draw the three main body parts then add additional body parts such as six legs, two sets of wings, antennae, etc.

Reproducible Materials:
Beautiful Bugs Rubric

Explorations and Extensions:
By learning the body parts of an insect the students will be able to differentiate between insects and other animals.

Lesson Development Resources:
"I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly" book
Insect poster

Reflections:
The students really enjoyed constructing the insect diagrams.
