Title:  The Baby Experience

Grade Level:  9 - 12
Overview:
Students will complete an assignment related to the first days of parenthood.
Approximate Duration:  5-8 days

         Students locate, select, and synthesize information from a variety of texts, media, references, and technological sources to acquire and communicate knowledge.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills of Internet use and other resources consistent with acceptable use policies including the legal consequences of plagiarism and the need for authenticity in student work through an understanding of copyright issues.
  • Refine knowledge and enhance skills in keyboarding, word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheets, databases, multimedia, and telecommunications in preparing and presenting classroom projects.
Objectives:
The objective of this activity is to:
1. Help students better understand the responsibilities involved in the day -to -day care of a newborn baby.
2. Help students realize that having a baby does not always turn out as they planned.
3. Help students become aware of the many birth defects and diseases that new born babies may be born with.
4. Help students realize the responsibilities and difficulities of caring for a handicapped or ill newborn.
5. Design a information pamphlet on their babies problem.

Plastic egg - one for each student.

List of diseases, handicaps, birth defects.

Background Information:
Students will have completed Chapters 11 & 12 in their text.
Students should be able to access the internet for research purposes.
Students should be able to use Print Shop to complete an information pamphlet.
Lesson Procedures:
Tell students this assignment is designed to give them some insight into the experiences faced by new parents. This is a research project and they will have one week to complete the the assignment. At the end of the week their parenting duties are over, but remember that a real parent's commitment is for life.

After completing their research, students will answer each question on the Baby Experience Assignment Sheet about their newborn and arrange their answers in report form. They will also develop a pamphlet on their babies specific problem or problems.
