Lesson Plan
Title:  Apple Trees
Subject:  Science
Grade Level:  K - 1
Overview:
Students will learn how to plant and care for an apple tree and the changes it goes through during the seasons.
Approximate Duration:  4 - 30 minute class periods
Content Standards:
  • Science as Inquiry
The students will do science by engaging in partial and full inquiries that are within their developmental capabilities.
  • Life Science
The students will become aware of the characteristics and life cycles of organisms and understand their relationships to each other and to their environment.
  • Science and the Environment
In learning environmental science, students will develop an appreciation of the natural environment, learn the importance of environmental quality, and acquire a sense of stewardship. As consumers and citizens, they will be able to recognize how our personal, professional, and political actions affect the natural world.

  • SI-E-A1
asking appropriate questions about organisms and events in the environment;   (1,3)
  • SI-E-A2
planning and/or designing and conducting a scientific investigation;   (2,3)
  • SI-E-A3
communicating that observations are made with one's senses;   (1,3)
  • SI-E-A6
communicating observations and experiments in oral and written formats;   (1,3)

  • LS-E-B1
observing and describing the life cycles of some plants and animals;   (1,3)
Educational Technology Standards:
  • Identify, explain, and effectively use input, output and storage devices of computers and other technologies (e.g., keyboard, mouse, scanner, adaptive devices, monitor, printer floppy disk, hard drive).
  • Use accurate and developmentally appropriate terminology (e.g., cursor, software, hardware, pull down menu, window, disk drive, hard drive, CD-ROM, laser disc) when referring to technology.
Objectives:
TLW - identify the sequence of growing an apple tree
TLW - identify the needs of a growing apple tree
TLW - plant apple trees
TLW - identify fully mature apple trees during the seasons
TLW - identify John Chapman as Johnny Appleseed

Background Information:
The students should know that apples grow on trees and are a fruit.
Technology skills - to use a mouse -
Lesson Procedures:
1. TTW - cut open an apple to show students apple seeds. Discuss the importance of seeds.
2. TTW - Read the first 5 pages of Pick Me An APPLE! From Seed to Tree- Discuss
3. TTW - give Growing Up! handout (sequence) from Kindergarten Teacher's Helper Aug/Sept. 2003 - students color, cut, sequence, paste in correct order-
4. TTW - have students use paint or Kid pix to illustrate the sequence of an apple tree's growth.
5. TTW - provide material for students to plant apple seeds - Teacher will use digital camera to take pictures or video -
6. TTW - Use handout Apple Tree Needs from Kindergarten Teacher's Helper Aug/Sept. 2003 - Discuss
7. TTW - complete book Pick Me An Apple! From Seed to Tree - use the book's pictures to have students describe how an apple tree looks from one season to the next.
8. TTW - Read the book, Apples - discuss John Chapman - parts of an apple, review the apple tree during the seasons.
10. TTW - have students use kid pix to illustrate an apple tree in each of the seasons
11. TTW - read Apples, Apples, Apples -Discuss - make applesauce and do apple prints- use video or digital camera to record events-
12. ALL will work together in using the pictures from the digital camera to put in correct sequence for class Apple Booklet.
Accommodations/Modifications:
Students with sensory impairments: Vision - 1) The student will be placed close to the teacher as she reads and shows pictures or visual aids. 2) The teacher will demonstrate on student's handout the directions that need to be followed. Physical 1) Pair with a non-disabled student. 2) Pre-cut activities to make glueing easier. Attention/Behavior Difficulties - 1) The student will be given physical opportunties in passing out supplies or taking up work. 2) The teacher will maintain eye contact during oral directions. 3) Praise often when the student is on task. Non-Reader - 1) Visual aids will be used often. 2) Oral responses will be written on board. 3) Pre-teach vocabulary and review daily.

Reflections:
I taught this lesson in mid-September. The students and I really had a good time. Next time I use this plan, I will extend it to 5 days - 30 minutes.
