Title:  Adventures with Phonics
Subject:  English/Language Arts
Grade Level:  K
Overview:
This lesson is one in which the students will identify letters and sounds. They will construct word families discovering new words, and read a story containing the new words. To enhance what they have learned the students will do an art project to conclude the lesson.
Approximate Duration:  One 60 minute Lesson

TLW orally state letters and sounds: t, s, f, b, d, c & a
TLW trace the letters on the computer.
TLW draw and color the letters on the computer.
TLW work in groups to construct word families on the computer.
TLW orally state and sound out vocabulary words.
TLW complete the decoding worksheet.
TLW color the letter print-outs, cut the letters out and apply tissue paper to each letter.

Background Information:
Students should be aware of the letters of the alphabet and their sounds.
Lesson Procedures:
The teacher will orally introduce the letters: t, s, f, b, d, c,& a and their sounds.

Each student will be given flashcards of each of the letters.

TLW identify objects in the room on the bulletin board that begin with the same beginning sounds.

TLW go to Kidpix on the computer to trace the letters and to color them.

TTW go to the board and demonstrate how to construct word families using at and am.

TLW complete the word family worksheets.

TLW construct the word families using the letters constructed in the art project.

TTW review by visiting websites which highlight the sounds t, s, f, b, d, c, & a.

Explorations and Extensions:
The students would transfer the letter sounds learned across the curriculum. For example: In the science class the students would identify animals that begin with these sounds. In the social studies class, the students would identify the community helpers that begin with these sounds.
