Where in the World is Black Bayou Lake Refuge? Title: Where in the World is Black Bayou Lake refuge?
Subject: Social Studies
Grade Level: 5 - 6Overview:
As an introduction to the lesson, students will locate Black Bayou Lake refuge using online tools. We will discuss the use of a map versus a globe and talk about the various maps that are available. The students will then divide into groups according to north, south, east, and west for the research. The students will locate the latitude and longitude of interesting places located in these areas. They will plot the location on a huge wall map using push pens. The students will then visit each area via the internet and record the high and low temperatures of a given area for five days. Students will enter data into Excel to create a graph of their findings.Approximate Duration: 5- 60 minute lessons

Students have been working with maps and globes since entering school; however, many of the students have not had the experience constructing a map. The students may not have been exposed to actually using lines of latitude and longitude to plot locations. This information will be used to give the students life like experiences by visiting areas and locating weather information which will be used to make a graph. This may be a new experience for most of the students.
Lesson Procedures:
Day One
1. Introduce the lesson by posing the question, "Just where in the world is Black Bayou Lake refuge?" Tell the students that we are going to begin a unit of study that will take us all over the United States. We will develop and sharpen map reading skills along the way as well as make graphs of weather conditions.
2. Using a projector and computer, go to http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/gazetteer
and type in Black Bayou Lake and the Zip Code. Pique interest by adding highways, water bodies, etc. Fly over 480 Richland Dr., Monroe, LA 71203. What is there? Discuss the fact that these are aerial photographs.
3. Discuss the features on the map and point out that these are map reading skills which will allow one to interpret a map correctly. Fly over areas using additional resources listed. Fly over the school and print a map.
4. Discuss the map reading skills that allow one to interpret a map correctly. Review the Compass Rose and cardinal directions with the students. Also, review the scale of distance and legend.
5. Still using the computer and projector go to
http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/geology/leveson/core/linksa/latlong_menu.html and review latitude and longitude with the students.
Day Two
1. Divide the students into the following groups: North, South, East, and West
2. Each group will have access to a laptop with a wireless internet connection.(The laptops are to be checked out through the Instructional Technology office,)
3. Present the task to the students. Each group will find an interesting geographic feature or city in their area. Go to http:www.hometownlocator.com/State/index.cfm for facts and features.
4. List at least three interesting facts about their place.
5. They will record the latitude and longitude of their place as well as plot it on a large wall map.
Day Three
1. Next, the students will go to Weather Underground, http://www.wunderground.com/, to find the highs and lows for the previous five days.
2. Record this information on a Research Guide which will have directions and web sites to aid them in their search.
3. The students will go to the computer and open Excel. The students will create a graph using the highs and lows data which was collected.
Day Four
1. Each group will create a PowerPoint presentation which will include an aerial photo of their place along with a graph created in Excel depicting the highs and lows for their "place".
Day Five
1. Proofread and edit the presentation using the rubric that will be used to assess the final student product.
2. Students will present their PowerPoint presentations.
