We All Live Together

Title:  We All Live Together
Subject:  Science
Grade Level:  1

Overview:

Through observation of classroom and family pets and animals in their natural habitat, first grade students will develop an understanding of the needs of plants and animal and how those needs are met.

Approximate Duration: Two, forty-five minute classes

Content Standards:
Science as Inquiry
The students will do science by engaging in partial and full inquiries that are within their developmental capabilities.
Life Science
The students will become aware of the characteristics and life cycles of organisms and understand their relationships to each other and to their environment.

Benchmarks:
LS-E-A1
identifying the needs of plants and animals, based on age-appropriate recorded observations; (1,2,3,4)
LS-E-C1
examining the habitats of plants and animals and determining how basic needs are met within each habitat; (1,2,3,4,5)
LS-E-C3
observing animals and plants and describing interaction or interdependence. (1,4)

Grade-Level Expectations (GLEs):
Grade 1
27. Identify what animals and plants need to grow and develop (LS-E-A1)
32. Describe features of some animals that benefit them in their environments (LS-E-C1)
33. Explain how pets' needs are met in their habitats (LS-E-C1)

Interdisciplinary Connections:
English/Language Arts : Standard 2
Students write competently for a variety of purposes and audiences.
English/Language Arts : Standard 4
Students demonstrate competence in speaking and listening as tools for learning and communicating.
Arts : Creative Expression
Students develop creative expression through the application of knowledge, ideas, communication skills, organization abilities and imagination.

Educational Technology Standards:
Use a variety of developmentally appropriate resources and productivity tools (e.g., logical thinking programs, writing and graphic tools, digital cameras, graphing software) for communication, presentation, and illustration of thoughts, ideas, and stories.
Use technology resources to assist in problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

Objectives:
TLW identify what animals and plants need to grow and develop.
TLW identify plant and animal characteristics that allow them to meet their needs.
TLW describe how pets' needs are met in their habitat.

Lesson Materials and Resources:
Field trip to Black Bayou Lake for the purpose of observing, recording, classifying, and predicting how plants and animals are interdependent.

Background Information:
The students will be familiar with Inspiration and KidPix software.  They will know the difference between plants and animal.  They will know and understand the basic needs of plants and animals

Lesson Procedures:
Day One
As a motivator sing the song, Five Little Speckled Frogs. Lyrics to the song can be found at Enchanted Learning http://www.enchantedlearning.com/paint/rhymes/coloring/Speckledfrogs.shtml.

After singing the song have the children name ways that the lily pad helps the frog.

Read aloud the trade book Forest.

Drawing on the experiences of the field trip, and the book, the teacher will use Inspiration to create a web describing the various ways animals need plants.

Name some animals that need plants for food.

Name animals that need plants for shelter.

Elicit that not only forest animals use plants, but also pets and farm animals.

Review new vocabulary using vocabulary cards.

Have the class work in groups of 4 or 5 using KidPix to create a book depicting the ways the animals need the plants to survive. Each picture should have one or two sentences explaining how the plants are helping the animals.  Allow each group to present their book to the class.

Day Two
How Animals Help Plants

Display a flowering plant or a picture of one. Tell students that bees often visit flowers.

Ask volunteers to tell how the bees need the flowers, then ask if they can think of ways the flowers might need the bees.  Tell them they will find out as we complete this lesson.

Draw a K-W-L chart to find out what they already know and what they want to find out about what plants and animals need to grow and thrive in their habitats.

Read The Reason for a Flower, by Ruth Heller

Have the children preview pages B11 and B13 in their science text book. Harcourt Science Unit B.

Read the pages with the children to help them relate the pictures to the text.

Discuss the pages with the class.

Using Inspiration the teacher will create a web describing the ways plants need animals.

Have the children summarize what they have learned by completing the K-W-L chart.

Have the class work in groups of 4 or 5 using KidPix to create a book depicting ways animals
help plants to survive. Each picture should have a sentence explaining how the animals are helping the plants.

Allow each group to present their book to the class.

Assessment Procedures:
Informal assessment will be ongoing during the lesson. The teacher will assess class participation, and learner involvement. Portfolio assessment will consist of a picture of a plant the student will have to write or draw what that plant needs to live or grow and what animals do to help meet those needs. A rubric will be used to assess student learning and growth.

Accommodations/Modifications:
I will use peer tutoring for exceptional students.
Students who need one-on-one may work with the classroom tutor.
See IEP's for additional modifications
