Title: A Storyboard for You About Black Bayou

Grade Level: 5 - 6Overview:
Students will use Microsoft PowerPoint and/or KidPix as well as Paint to create a storyboard about Black Bayou Lake refuge for a younger child. The fifth grade student will interview a child in the first or second grade using an Interview Guide. The student will then visit selected web sites to locate information and pictures for the storyboard, or if possible visit the refuge on a field trip. The student will illustrate the storyboard using Paint. When all is said and done, the older student will present the storyboard to the student interviewed and leave that child with a digital copy of the storyboard.
Approximate Duration: 5 - 60 minute lessons

Objectives:

2. The student will conduct research in a Track to find information for a writing activity.

4. The student will use the digital camera to take pictures.
5. The student will create an electronic storyboard for and about the younger child interviewed and Black Bayou Lake using Microsoft PowerPoint or KidPix.
6. The student will write the storyboard void of spelling and grammatical errors, and will use figurative language throughout the writing.

Bayou or Lake...Will the real one please stand up!
- Background Information:
Most of the students will have limited knowledge concerning Black Bayou Lake refuge. They will, however, be able to search selected web sites for information. The students will have varying abilities with writing skills.
Lesson Procedures:- Day 1
- 1. All of you will become authors and you will write an electronic storyboard about Black Bayou Lake to help a younger child develop reading skills.
2. Pre-arrange two classes. A first or second grade class should be matched with a fifth grade class. Pair a younger student with an older student to be interviewed using an Interview Guide. The classes can be divided in half for the interviews.
3. The fifth grade student will conduct the interview and take a digital picture of the student.
- Day 2 and 3
- 1. After the interview the fifth grade student will search selected web sites to find information which was asked on the Interview Guide.
2. The fifth grade students will travel to Black Bayou Lake to find answers and take pictures for the storyboard.
- Day 4
- 1. The student will use the information on the completed Interview Guide along with the information on the research guide to complete the guide created in Inspiration. Click on the Outline view to help organize your writing. (If the teacher does not have access to Inspiration this activity can be done using Microsoft Word and a story map or cluster.)
2. The student will use online tools for spelling and definitions of words.
3. The student will now use Microsoft PowerPoint or KidPix to create a storyboard.
4. Proofread and edit the storyboard in pairs.
5. Use Paint and digital pictures to illustrate the storyboard.- Day 5
- 1. As a culminating activity for this lesson, the students present the work to the younger child that was interviewed.
