Title: Looking for Bugs

Overview:
This lesson will familiarize Kindergarten students with various insects and their sounds. After listening to the story about The Very Quiet Cricket by Erick Carle, the students will discuss the various insects and the sounds they make. Students will draw their favorite insect using the software KidPix.

Approximate Duration: 2-30 minute sessions

Content Standards:
Science as Inquiry
The students will do science by engaging in partial and full inquiries that are within their developmental capabilities.

The students will become aware of the characteristics and life cycles of organisms and understand their relationships to each other and to their environment.

Background Information:
Students will have knowledge of bugs; however they may not know that they are called insects.
Students will recognize a bug; however, they may think all insects are alike.

Lesson Procedures:

Day One
1. Assess prior knowledge by asking students, "What is a bug?"
2. To motivate the students, the teacher will use a ladybug puppet. The ladybug puppet will tell the students that they are going to meet a lot of insects today.
3. The teacher will read the book The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle.
4. The students will recall all of the insects mentioned in the story.
5. Go to Black Bayou Lake Project website http://monroe.k12.la.us/mcs/black_bayou_files/index.html to view pictures of bugs. 
Day Two
1. Students will work in cooperative groups in centers to identify and compare insects.
2. Group A will use insect manipulatives and pictures to observe characteristics of insects.
3. Group B will use KidPix to create their own insect picture.
4. TTW create a slideshow in KidPix with the students' pictures.

Assessment Procedures:
The teacher will observe the children.
A rubric will be used to assess the picture produced with KidPix.

Accommodations/Modifications:

See individual IEP's for additional modifications.
The paraprofessional will help students who need individual tutoring.
