A Lengthy Visit at Black Bayou Lake

Title: A Lengthy Visit at Black Bayou Lake
Subject: Mathematics
Grade Level: 2

Overview:
In this lesson, second grade students will visit Black Bayou Lake refuge to locate objects that can be measured. The students will work in pairs for the activities which involve estimating, measuring, recording and graphing the objects found at the refuge. The students will enjoy using graphing software to create their graphs.

Approximate Duration:  2 sixty minute lessons

Content Standards:
Measurement
In problem-solving investigations, students demonstrate an understanding of the concepts, processes, and real-life applications of measurement.

Benchmarks:
M-1-E
applying (measure or solve measurement problem) the concepts of length (inches, feet, yards, miles, millimeters, centimeters, decimeters, meters, kilometers), area, volume, capacity (cups, liquid pints and quarts, gallons, milliliters, liters), weight (ounces, pounds, tons, grams, kilograms), mass, time (seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years), money, and temperature (Celsius and Fahrenheit) to real-world experiences; (1,2,3,4,5)
M-2-E
selecting and using appropriate standard and non-standard units of measure (e.g., paper clips and Cuisenaire rods) and tools for measuring length, area, capacity, weight/mass, and time for a given situation by considering the purpose and precision required for the task; (1,2,3,4)
M-3-E
using estimation skills to describe, order, and compare measures of length, capacity, weight/mass, time, and temperature; (1,2,3,4)

Grade-Level Expectations (GLEs):
Grade 2
14. Measure and appropriately label measures of length and perimeter (i.e., inch, centimeter, foot), capacity (i.e., cup, quart, liter), and weight/mass (i.e., pound, kilogram)(M-1-E)
17. Select and use appropriate tools and units to measure length, time, capacity, and weight (e.g., scales for pounds and kilograms; rulers for inches and centimeters; measuring containers for cup, quarts, and liters) (M-2-E)
19. Estimate length in standard units (inch, foot, and centimeter) (M-3-E)

Educational Technology Standards:
Use a variety of developmentally appropriate resources and productivity tools (e.g., logical thinking programs, writing and graphic tools, digital cameras, graphing software) for communication, presentation, and illustration of thoughts, ideas, and stories.

Objectives:
TLW estimate the length of different objects in inches and/or feet.
TLW measure and record the length of different objects in inches and/or feet.
TLW graph results using Graph Club software.

Background Information:
Students should be able to use an inch ruler and a tape measure. They should understand the concept of estimation. Students should have some experience reading and creating bar graphs. Basic knowledge of a computer is necessary.

Lesson Procedures:
Day One
1. To gain interest in the lesson, tell the students that they will be taking a LENGTHY visit to Black Bayou Lake refuge.
2. Show the students the Black Bayou Lake web site, http://www.mcschools.net/mcs/black_bayou_files/index.html. Ask students to take note of objects that may be measured while visiting the refuge. Use Inspiration software to lead the students in a brainstorming activity which will identify objects that can be measured while at the refuge.
3. Review field trip safety rules and assign partners.

Day Two
1. At the refuge, the students will work in pairs to find at least fifteen objects that can be measured. When they find an object, they must discuss, agree upon, and record their estimate of the length of that object in inches or feet on their Lengthy Visit Estimation Sheet.
2. Each pair of students will then be given a tape measure and an inch ruler along with a record sheet for this activity. Students should measure each item and record the actual measure of each object on the Lengthy Visit Recording Sheet.

Day Three - Field Trip
1. Re-visit Black Bayou Lake refuge by having students share their experiences orally.
2. Students will go to the computer and open Graph Club or Excel software to graph the results of their measurement activity. Tell the students to group objects based upon the following criteria: 0-6", 7-11", 1-3', 4-6', 7' or more. For teachers who may not have graphing software go to Create a Graph http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/graphing/.
3.With the teacher's help, the students will place their graphs in a slide show.

Assessment Procedures:
The teacher will monitor the students as they work together.
A Lengthy Visit at Black Bayou rubric will be used to assess group performance.
The students will be assessed on their ability to work together, pose questions, explore to find suitable answers, and share their findings with others.

Accommodations/Modifications:
The teacher must follow specialized Individualized Educational Plans or 504 Modification Plans for special needs students. The students will work in pairs for the activities.
