Overview:
Third grade music students will compare and contrast the sounds of frogs by listening to different frogs using the internet. They will imitate frog sounds through song.  The students will write a descriptive paragraph about the different frog sounds.  The student will draw an illustration for the paragraph. 

Approximate Duration: 2 sixty-minute period

Background Information:
Students have traveled to Black Bayou Lake refuge as an opener for this unit. They are studying amphibians.

Lesson Procedures:
Day One
1. To get class excited about frogs and singing, Go to http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Cottage/3192/ and sing karaoke to the song, Frog Went A Courtin'.
2. Listen to the sound of various frogs on the computer. Show pictures of the frogs on the TV or A/V screen. Go to http://www.naturesound.com/frogs/frogs.html for sites and sounds of frogs. Discuss variations on the sounds that frogs make and discuss what they might mean.
3. Learn frog songs. "El Coqui" from page 282-283 of Making Music Grade 2 and "Shu ha mo" from page 270-271 of Making Music Grade 3.
Day Two
1. The students will go to the computer and open KidPix to write a descriptive paragraph on a particular frog and its sound. The students will draw a picture to go with the paragraph.
2. The teacher will place the the work into a slideshow in KidPix.

Assessment Procedures:
A rubric will be used to assess the paragraph.

Accommodations/Modifications:
Consult each student's IEP for specific modifications.
Preferential seating and peer tutoring as needed.

Explorations and Extensions:
Students can listen for frog sounds at home and make comparisons to the ones studied in class. They may also read trade books on frogs and study their habitat.
