Overview:
Students will visit Black Bayou Lake Refuge to identify and name plant and animal life.  The students will then make an experience booklet to be shared in class.  This lesson was originally written for deaf children who have a very limited vocabulary and language base; however, this lesson would be beneficial for all students.

Approximate Duration: 2 sixty minute lessons

As consumers and citizens, they will be able to recognize how our personal, professional, and political actions affect the natural world.

Background Information:
1. Know time order concepts such as first, second, before, after, next, etc.
2. Be able to cut and paste.
3. Have a basic sight word vocabulary.

Lesson Procedures:
DAY 1
1. TTW show a video, "Chicken Little", to introduce the concept of time order. Go to LPB CyberChannel

2. TTW present sequencing pictures of trip to Black Bayou Lake: leaving school, arriving at Black Bayou Lake, touring the visitor's center, going on the trail, eating lunch, etc.
3. TTW allow students to place pictures in proper order on a magnetic board emphasizing time order words such as first, second, next, and last.
4. TTW guide students in making a digital book about "My Trip to Black Bayou Lake" using the hard copy of time order pictures and in writing sentences for each page.
5. TTW assist the students in creating a slide using Microsoft PowerPoint. The slides will be combined to create a storyboard or digital book of their trip to Black Bayou Lake.
6. TTW assist the students with inserting digital pictures of plants and animals taken at Black Bayou Lake as well as writing sentences for each slide.
DAY 2
1. TTW show students a slide show of plants and animals seen at Black Bayou Lake. Students will identify and name each.
2. TTW give students a hard copy of pictures. Students will cut and paste pictures on individual squares of cardstock. They will copy the written name on an identical piece of cardstock.
3. TTW guide students in playing "Memory" using the pictures and written vocabulary.
4. TTW have students add a vocabulary page of plants and animals to their book from DAY 1.
5. TTW give students a handout in which they will match the picture to its name.
6. Early finishers will draw pictures of their favorite part of the trip in KidPix.
7. TTW place the pictures in sequential order in a KidPix slideshow.
8. In closing, the students will view the slideshow. As they view the slideshow, the students can state the time order such as first, second, next, and last.
9. The storyboard can be printed and bound for each student.

Assessment Procedures:
1. Rubric for digital book "My Trip to Black Bayou"
2. Completion of handout for plants and animals matching activity
3. Observation of participation in "Memory" game and sequencing picture activity
 
Accommodations/Modifications:
1. Students will use means of communication such as sign language or cued speech.
2. Refer to student's IEP for accommodations/modifications.
