Overview:
Black Bayou Lake refuge is a lake; however, it is many times referred to as a bayou. In this lesson students will research the Black Bayou Lake refuge and the animals that inhabit the area. They will act as tour guides as they create and present a PowerPoint presentation of their findings.

Approximate Duration: 5 - 60 minute lessons and Field Trip

The students will observe copyright policies when creating PowerPoint presentations.

Background Information:
Most students will not be familiar with Black Bayou Lake refuge. Many of the students will have experience creating PowerPoint presentations. All of the students will have previous writing experiences; however, many will not have used these experiences to create a visual presentation.

Lesson Procedures:
Day 1
1. Introduce the lesson by reading, "Welcome to Bayou Town!" by Cherie D. Schadler.
Ask the students if they know of a bayou that is located around this area. Lead students to recognize that Black Bayou Lake refuge is often referred to as bayou. Visit the Black Bayou Lake refuge web site.
2. Using Inspiration software, create a web of bayou characteristics found in the book.
3. Define a lake using WordCentral.com .

Day 2
1. View the video "Fresh Water Wetlands, Lakes, Ponds and Pools, " from United Streaming, taking notes of key points.
2. Students will access web sites in TrackStar to obtain the answers to questions on the Black Bayou Research Guide.
Day 3
1. Visit Black Bayou Lake refuge and take pictures with the digital camera.

Day 4
1. Using a Venn diagram, compare and contrast a lake and a bayou.
2. Students will write paragraphs comparing and contrasting a lake and a bayou using Microsoft Word.
3. Students will work in groups to proof and edit their work.
4. Students will create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. The students will be given a rubric as a guide in developing the presentation.
Day 5
1.
Students pretend to be tour guides as deliver their presentations to the class.
