Overview:
Students will research Black Bayou Lake using the Internet and then design a landscape based on Black Bayou Lake using Chinese Batiking and oil pastels. After the landscapes are completed the students will take digital pictures of the batiks to use in the creation of a slide show created with Microsoft PowerPoint.
Approximate Duration: 4 - 45 minute class periods

The students should have a general understanding of how to use a computer and conduct research on the Internet. The art of batiking will be new for the students.
Lesson Procedures:
Day One
1. Give each student a copy of the Black Bayou Lake worksheet. Students will use selected web sites to research Black Bayou Lake and to answer the Black Bayou Lake worksheet. The class will review the worksheet at the end of the first day class period.
Day Two
1. The teacher and students will review what the class has learned about Black Bayou Lake from the class before.
2. Next, teacher and students will discuss Chinese batiking and view examples. Teacher will discuss and demonstrate to students how to batik the water of Black Bayou.
A. First use blue crayon to create horizon line and then add ripples into water, but do NOT color in the water blue.
B. Next, do a light wash over blue crayon with black water color paint.
Students will follow the teacher's example and batik black bayou. Students will then place batik outside to dry, for next step.
Day Three
1. The teacher and students will review information learned about Black Bayou and batiking, from previous class.
2. The teacher will demonstrate how to mix and blend oil pastels to add cypress trees and moss, to Black Bayou batik.
3. Students will follow the teacher's example on how to blend and mix oil pastels to add cypress trees and moss to their Black Bayou batik.
4. Teacher and students will discuss what students have learned about Black Bayou Lake and Chinese batiking.
5. Students will swap Black Bayou batik and will check off all elements completed on the Black Bayou Batik rubric.
6. The students' Black Bayou batik will be displayed outside on the wall.
7. Students will take pictures of their Black Bayou batik with digital camera.
8. Students will use their pictures of the Black Bayou batiks and their research to create a Black Bayou Lake presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint.
Day Four
1. The students will share their presentations.
